How casino bonuses really work

A bonus is only as good as its terms. Here's what the headline number leaves out β€” and the five offer types you'll meet.

Most common

Match / welcome bonus

The casino matches a % of your first deposit, e.g. "100% up to €500." A 100% match doubles your starting balance β€” but the bonus part is locked behind wagering.

No risk to try

No-deposit bonus

A small amount (e.g. €10) or free spins just for registering. Great for testing a site, but it carries the highest wagering (often 40×–70Γ—) and low max-cashout caps.

Slots focused

Free spins

Spins on a specific slot. Winnings usually have their own wagering requirement, so read whether the spins are "wager-free" or not.

For returning players

Reload & weekly

Smaller match bonuses on later deposits to keep you playing. Terms are usually similar to the welcome offer, sometimes with slightly higher wagering.

Loss insurance

Cashback

A % of net losses returned over a period. The best versions are paid as real cash with no wagering; the rest are bonus funds with strings attached.

The one rule

Read before you opt in

Once you accept a bonus you're committed to its wagering, max bet and game-contribution rules. If in doubt, you can always decline the bonus and play with cash.

Wagering requirements (the catch)

Also called rollover or playthrough, this is how many times you must bet a bonus before any winnings become withdrawable. The industry average sits around 35Γ—; anything under 35Γ— is considered "low wagering." A €100 bonus at 35Γ— means €3,500 in total bets β€” wins and losses both count toward it.

One detail matters more than the multiplier: whether wagering applies to the bonus only or to deposit + bonus. Deposit €100 and get €100 at 35Γ— bonus-only is €3,500 to clear; at 35Γ— on deposit+bonus it's €7,000. Same headline, double the work.

Sticky vs non-sticky

With a non-sticky (cashable) bonus, once you clear wagering you withdraw the bonus and the winnings β€” the player-friendly kind. With a sticky (phantom) bonus, the bonus amount is removed at withdrawal and you keep only winnings above it. Always check which one you're accepting.

Not all games count the same

Slots typically contribute 100% toward wagering, so they clear a bonus fastest. Table games count far less β€” blackjack often just 10% β€” and roulette or baccarat are frequently excluded entirely. Play an excluded game and you make zero progress, so match your game choice to the terms.

Game odds & RTP, compared

Return to player (RTP) is the long-run average a game pays back; house edge is the flip side that the casino keeps. These are established, widely-published figures β€” every game still favours the house over time.

GameTypical RTPHouse edgeEdge levelNotes
Blackjack (basic strategy)99.5%~0.5%LowestSkill lowers the edge; the best value on the floor.
Video poker (optimal)98–99.5%0.5–2%LowDepends entirely on the pay table β€” check it.
Baccarat (banker bet)98.9%1.06%LowBanker is the best bet; avoid the tie.
Craps (pass line)~98.6%1.41%LowTaking odds behind the line lowers it further.
European roulette97.3%2.70%MediumSingle zero. Always prefer it to American.
Slots92–97%3–8%VariesHuge range by title β€” look up the listed RTP.
American roulette94.7%5.26%HighThe extra "00" nearly doubles the edge. Skip it.

RTP isn't the whole story β€” volatility matters too

Two slots can share a 96% RTP yet feel completely different. Low-volatility games pay small wins often, stretching your session; high-volatility games pay rarely but bigger, which suits jackpot hunters. RTP is a long-run average over millions of rounds, so a single session can swing wildly in either direction.

Payment methods compared

Withdrawal speed is where good and bad casinos separate. Deposits are nearly always instant; getting money out is the real test.
